Like the latest chapter in the story from a time long ago in a galaxy far, far away, Gears of War 4 is directed by a new generation of creators, shares a lot of similar narrative structures to the beloved first piece of the trilogy it succeeds, and is an experience you’ll walk away from with a big smile on your face – in campaign, Versus, and Horde modes alike. I never expected to compare Gears of War 4 to The Force Awakens, but I couldn’t be happier to do so. Abrams would no doubt appreciate what Gears 4 accomplishes."> Review by Ryan McCaffrey It’s about as good of a franchise reawakening as I could’ve hoped for. By the end, it's clear that it’s paving a path other developers could (and hopefully will) follow. Halfway through, I realized this is the best third-person shooter around. During the introduction, the sights are almost impossibly beautiful. It presents such refreshing and disruptive ideas to Gears of War: Judgment's campaign that it has an effect comparable to the original’s in 2006. The Bulletstorm developer brings a bold new energy to Epic Games’ excellent (but overly familiar) action series. People Can Fly is exactly what Gears of War needed. By the end, it's clear that it’s paving a path other developers could (and hopefully will) follow."> Review by Mitch Dyer The noted hitches, design decisions and ‘been-there, done-that’ feel of much of the content colors the overall experience, but it certainly didn’t keep me from having one hell of a good time. Every third-person, cover-based shooter from here on out will likely be compared to Gears 3, and it provides a fitting and poignant- if sometimes cheesy - closing chapter to the trilogy. Gears of War 3 represents state-of-the-art design and gameplay where you become the king badass among a gory world of bad-asses. I imagine you’ll feel the same."> Review by Casey Lynch Still, none of that comes close to holding back Gears of War 2 from its destiny: being one of the best games available on the Xbox 360. It has its flaws when it comes to the technical side of multiplayer and the last act of the campaign and the voice acting might turn some off. It has non-stop action, fresh gameplay, varied environments, an engrossing storyline, multiplayer that will have people busy for years to come, and some of the nastiest and coolest kills I've seen in a videogame. If you haven't figured it out by now, Gears of War 2 is what's going to sell Xbox 360s this holiday season. Still, none of that comes close to holding back Gears of War 2 from its destiny: being one of the best games available on the Xbox 360."> Review by Nate Ahearn
